The programme Cooperative Communication between the Family and the School
(Comunicación cooperativa entre la familia y la escuela) is the result of the close
collaboration of a significant number of people worried about the role of families
in school environments. The programme was born in an attempt to help parents
and teachers learn how to communicate and, at the same time, help parent learn
how to be involved in the school life meaningfully. The core philosophy of the
programme is the empowerment of individuals and groups and the joint process of
decision-making. The materials in questions have not been envisaged as a way to
educate parents, but rather in order to foster relations between the families and
the school. That is why teachers and parents work separately at the beginning.
Later on in the process, they combine their efforts together with the school
management team in order to decide the measures to implement. This article
explores the background of the programme Cooperative Communication between
the Family and the School. It revises its forming elements and materials, analyses
the role of facilitators and, finally, it puts forward an activity that takes place in one
of the training sessions for parents. [-]
