Motivation is one of the key elements to succeed when learning a foreign language. However, there are some other aspects strongly linked to motivation that should be considered in the learning process such as the methodology used. For this reason, teachers should be constantly looking for and learning about new and effective ways of teaching.
In spite of the fact that groupwork and games are really beneficial for students, both are usually disregarded by teachers, probably because they are not studied and stated in the curriculum. Hence, working in groups and playing games is not very common in the EFL classroom and these are often relegated to activities performed when holidays are around the corner.
During my internship, I did not observe any groupwork activity and students only played some kind of games sporadically. This is why this study tries to improve teaching practices by working on a particular grammatical content using games and cooperative groupwork in a 1st of ESO classroom. The present paper is divided into four main parts. The first one covers the theoretical background in which some theories regarding games, groupwork and cooperative learning are provided. The second one is concerned with classroom implementation and the description of the activities developed. Then, the results obtained after the study implementation are presented showing that students have a positive response towards the activities performed. Finally, I will discuss some conclusions resulting. [-]
