Teenagers social interactions start to increase during their adolescence, this is why peer
relationships become more important during this period, as they are a source of emotional
adjustment and well-being. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the
role of the different personality traits, using the Big Five personality factors (Extraversion,
Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Openness and Conscientiousness), in the emergence of the
friendship bonds between peers. Likewise, we intend to study the effect of these dimensions
individually in the process of choosing friends in both, rejection and acceptance processes.
For this, we used a sample of 422 students from the Institute of Secondary Education El
Caminàs (Castellón de la Plana), with ages between 12 and 21 years. These participants
responded the JS-NEO-S inventory to assess personality and completed a series of
sociodemographic data regarding their friendship relations with their classmates.Linear
Regression analyses showed how Extraversion was proved to be a factor of great
importance in the number of friendships one establishes, as well as in the amount of positive
nominations received. The results obtained after an analysis of bivariate correlations
reflected the importance of certain personality traits, in adolescents, in the process of
selecting friendships. High Extraversion is positively related to having a greater number of
friends, as well as being more likely to be selected as a friend by others. On the other hand,
low Agreeableness has a direct relation with peer rejection. Furthermore, the study highlights
the importance each different dimensions of personality has in establishing affective bonds
of friendship between peers. [-]
