The use of the imagination is one of the main features that can be seen in
the poetry of the Romantic period but it is also present in the narratives of
the Gothic genre. One of the most well-known Romantic poets, John Keats,
took characteristics not only from the period in which he was living but also
from the emergent Gothic genre and created one of the first pieces of
decadent poetry, “The Eve of St. Agnes”. In this poem, characteristics of
both periods are present, being mainly reflected on one of the most
prominent themes of the poem, the theme of enchantment. Set in a remote
castle, with a folk tradition as the background story, “The Eve of St. Agnes”
deals with the story of two young lovers, Porphyro and Madeline, and their
struggle to be together. The aim of this paper is to examine how the theme of
enchantment is addressed by Keats and how it manifests in the poem. In
order to do so, the context in which the poem was written as well as a brief
account of the different existing versions will be first introduced. Once this
has been accomplished, it will be discussed how Keats reflected and
exploited the theme of enchantment in “The Eve of St. Agnes”, commenting
different aspects such as the setting, its form and metre, the vocabulary and
names used or the role of the two main characters of the story. Finally, the
relevance of these elements as well as the main ideas examined during the
paper will be discussed in the conclusion. [-]
