The trilogy Before…of Linklater relates the role of love and time in the life and in the
cinema. The cinematographer handles the time, using it as a machine of the time. With
photographic art, people seek to encapsulate the time. The film manages to capture it in a
more comprehensive way, because it is capable of representing the movement, and that
encapsulates it. What camera films, remains therefore permanently fixed in celluloid.
The history of the cinema can be understood as a story about the construction of the time
and the representation of love. Already in the era of the silent film, with the Slapstick, love
manages to have great influence in the various genres that are beginning to emerge. With
the classicism it appears a new way of representing the passion, that arrives to the cinema
of our time. Thanks to the modernity we start to see a more realistic idea about what we
understand as love.
Richard Linklater's films treated in a very characteristic way time and reality. In many of his
films the characters like to walk and talk, because the words are action in the movies.
Sometimes the director approaches so much to the reality that sometimes it is difficult to
distinguish what is fiction and what is not, because his fiction is dyed of documentary
features; even the first movie of the trilogy is based on an own of the director who spent a
night with a young woman whom he had just met.
In the trilogy we will discuss about how the present is built from the past: from the regained
time, from the imagined future. The metaphor of the ephemeral and the expiration infects
the third film. How the characters walk or wander through a route that runs along while the
protagonists talk. How vehicles are a symbol of a way that two people will travel together.
The way in which passion is framed within a scene through the look of our eyes. How
other couples are omens of the relationship between Jesse and Celine. And how arts like
writing and architecture are useful to remind what existed in the past. [-]
