The present article discusses the evolution of the palm grove of Elx, starting with the interest to maintain this alive. The author first situates the palm grove in its historical and geographical context and then goes back to its origins, linked to the use of the palm in the local economy and the region. However, the predominant cultural and tourism interests at present can contribute to the gradual disappearance of the old rural uses of this environment. The article examines the relationship between the palm grove and the urban development of Elx, the conversion to public land and the risks of degradation inherent to the changes produced. [-]
