Beloved is a well-known novel which was called the new «Medea» because of Sethe’s history and her
rebel mood. But in this paper we will focused on another character who was usually relegated to the
background: Denver. Throughout the history the young girl rushes different acts that go beyond the limits
of her world and social standards. She has a ghost as her only friend; a ghost that becomes a physical
presence, a revenant. Then, Denver breaks her dependence with her mother, after having thought even
in killing her. But finally, she is able to end all facts that makes her suffer as a young, black, slave
daughter, with a mother marked by tragedy and as inhabitant of a haunted house. Denver evolves,
transgresses, and becomes a mature and free woman. The aim of this essay is, then, study Denver’s
transgression which was being kept in the shadow of her mother and her «resurrected» sister: Beloved. [-]
