The Paralympic Games is an international competition founded by Ludwig
Guttmann in 1960 aimed at athletes with certain types of physical, mental and
sensory disabilities such as amputations, blindness, cerebral palsy and
intellectual deficiencies. Spain participated for the first time in this event in the
paralympic games of Tel Aviv in 1968, and since then, has not missed a year.
Although the Spanish delegation has participated almost 50 years in this sport
event that is held every four years in parallel to the Olympic Games, it was not
until the paralympics of Barcelona 1992 when the Spanish delegation began to
obtain good results, being the Valencian athletes The fourth part of the
delegation in the last Paralympic games held in Rio de Janeiro. With the report Deportistas y punto: social, economic and media reality , it seeks
to find out why the high level of the Paralympic athletes in Valencia as well as
deepen their professional life by answering questions such as how they started
to practice sport for the That they are competing, what their training routines
are, and how much difference there is between their routines and those carried
out by a conventional athlete. On the other hand, this article seeks to delve into
why Paralympic athletes experience media inequality, that is, they do not
occupy as much space in the media as an Olympic athlete. That is why the
athletes interviewed for this report, have in first person, how they feel about this
situation. Although everyone agrees that much progress has been made, there
is still a long way to go. With all this, Ariadna Edo, David Casinos, David Levecq, Ricardo Ten and
Álvaro Valera, along with Gabriel Melis, Luis Leardy and Josep Miquel Moya,
will also talk about the aid available to an athlete who practices the sport
adapted to reach to the high level competition. [-]
