En este estudio se utilizaron técnicas estructurales de neuroimagen para investigar las
diferencias cerebrales entre 26 bilingües activos y 42 bilingües pasivos diagnosticados con
Deterioro Cognitivo Leve (DCL). El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar si el
bilingüismo actúa como un factor protector para la demencia, observando un mayor grado de
atrofia cerebral en bilingües activos que en bilingües pasivos (o monolingües), pese a presentar
el mismo diagnóstico y síntomas. Los resultados sugieren que los bilingües activos con el
mismo diagnóstico de DCL que los bilingües pasivos muestran mayores niveles de atrofia
cerebral que estos últimos en áreas específicas como el precuneus, el área de Wernicke o el giro
de Heschl, sin mostrar otras diferencias en las puntuaciones de test neuropsicológicos, la edad o
los años de escolarización. Estos resultados aportan evidencias de acuerdo con anteriores
estudios en los que se sugiere que el bilingüismo actúa como un factor protector para la
demencia en los estadios más tempranos de deterioro. [-]

In this study we used brain structural imaging to investigate the differences in 26 active
and 42 passive bilinguals diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The aim of our
investigation was to determine if bilingualism acts as a protective factor for dementia, with
active bilinguals showing a higher level of brain atrophy but the same diagnose and symptoms
as passive bilinguals (or monolinguals). Our findings suggest that active bilinguals with the
same MCI diagnose as passive bilinguals show greater brain atrophy than the latter in specific
brain areas such as the precuneus, Wernicke’s area or the Heschl’s gyrus, without further
differences in neuropsychological tests scores, age or years of schooling. This provides evidence
in line with previous studies suggesting that bilingualism acts as a protective factor for dementia
in early stages of deterioration. [-]
