Because of the increased incidence of vertebral metastases in breast cancer in recent years due to the longer life expectancy of this primary tumor, we want to study when to perform a surgical intervention on this problem, based on the prognosis an preoperative state of patients.
Methods: We have conducted a review of the literature in PubMed, Cochran and Tripdatabase including all articles discussing the surgical treatment of breast cancer metastases since 2011.
Results: Almost 100% of patients with symptomatology of a vertebral metastasis and a good baseline situation improve or give up their symptoms after a surgical intervention. The overall survival rate of these patients after the operation is 29.55 months.
Conclusion: Regarding the way to decide if you have to perform a surgical treatment in a patient with vertebral metastases from breast cancer, it is necessary to take into account the patient’s prognosis, preoperative state, symptoms produced by the metastasis, location and its behavior. [-]
