ganancia ponderal gestacional (GPG).
Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Aunque no

Objectives: To determine if there is a relationship between adequate nutritional intake and
weight gain during pregnancy; and analyze the influence of the physical exercise pattern and
the gestational weight gain (GWG).
Methods: A total of 787 pregnant women who began prenatal care in Hospital La Fe (Valencia,
Spain) between February 2004 and July 2005 were followed up. GWG was calculated using
maternal weight recorded in the medical records during prenatal visits and classified according
to the Institute of Medicine guidelines. Participants completed a food frequency and exercise
questionnaire at 12 and 32 weeks. The analysis was performed using chi-square test and a
binary logistic regression (simple and multivariate).
Results: The high intake of processed baked goods (p:0.013) and high milk intake at week 32
(p:0.010) increases the risk of excessive weight gain. High intake of soft drinks modifies the
weight gain as an insufficient (p:0.049) and excessive gain (p:0.000). Although there is no
significant relationship with weight gain regarding diet quality, an association was observed
when comparing Q4 and Q1 with insufficient weight gain (p:0.039). A moderate physical
activity reduces the risk of excessive weight gain (p:0.020), but being always standing or doing
heavy work (p:0.043), increases the risk of excessive weight gain.
Conclusion: High consumption of soft drinks is associated with insufficient and excessive
weight gain. High intake of processed baked goods and dairy products and physical being
always standing or doing heavy work is related with excessive weight gain. In contrast,
moderate physical exercise reduces the risk of excessive weight gain. [-]
