Between 1616, when Philip III created the Royal Committee of the ImmaculateConception, and 1661, when Philip IV obtained the decree Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarumfrom the Papacy, the Spanish Monarchy undertook an intense campaign in order to promotethis belief. During those decades, the crown sent to Rome several embassies and manySpanish cities got involved with the defense of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The aim of this article is to present some of the artistic constructions linked to those Spanishembassies and ambassadors to the Holy See and to reflect on the role of the arts in behalf ofthe doctrine.
