The aim of this article is to examine the adaptation of Marie Belloc’s novel The Lodger (1913) into the film by Alfred Hitchcock (1926) from a gender perspective. Until now, numerous studies have focused on the passage of a novel into the screen, but they rarely examine the gender implications of such passage. In this article, I will shed light on how the feminine characters of the novel (written by a woman) are reprised in the film (directed by a man). This analysis will help me to establish whether some of the features identified for The Lodger are maintained in subsequent Hitchcock films in terms of how the female figure is represented. [-]
