The purpose of the research described in this master’s thesis is to show a detailed approach and the results of teaching specific English vocabulary to two different groups of 4th year of secondary school students by activation of frames through humour comic strips. Students of both groups showed an upper-elementary level of English, and while most of the students of one of the groups usually showed interest towards the English language, most of the students in the other group normally were less motivated and interested than their counterpart.
Usually textbooks for English as a foreign language are designed not to learn vocabulary in context, not related to any situation whatsoever. Normally they include a vocabulary section in every chapter and words are normally classified into groups depending on the semantic field they belonged to or matched with their antonyms. However, the main idea of this work consists in teaching 24 words in a context provided by 12 comic strips, which also would make students evoke particular frames.
After the implementation of this approach, the results have shown that it has proven to be an interesting teaching-learning experience, as well as effective in order to improve students’ vocabulary acquisition. Using comics and frames has also helped to create a more participatory classroom environment and was highly motivating for students of both groups. [-]
