The present work aims to study the status of women in al-Andalus, mainly during the reign of
Omeya dynasty (756-1031), the Taifas and the domination of northafrica (1031-1212). For this
purpose, we will focus on the urban areas, being our subject of study both free and slave
women. We will begin with a review of the status of women in the pre-Islamic society of alŶahiliya
and in the Islamic corpus, to further focus on the role and situation of these in the
Andalusian society. Only then, we will be able to understand how the life of the Andalusians
women will be conditioned by the conception of female honor or ʻird of the traditional Arab
society. [-]
