Kësterite, Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4, has emerged as a promising absorber material to substitute CIGS in thin film solar cells due to its lower cost and toxicity and tuneable band gap. In the present work, compounds with kësterite structure as Cu2ZnSnS4, Cu2ZnSnSe4 and Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 have been synthesised by the hydrothermal method starting with precursors made by two different routes: co-precipitation of metal selenites followed by hydrothermal treatment and direct hydrothermal treatment of a precursor solution. During the preparation process, the influence of several parameters has been evaluated, e.g. starting reactants (as precipitates or solutions), pH of the solution, the use of the reducing agent, temperature and time of the hydrothermal treatment and heating cycle. The obtained powders have been deposited by doctor Blade technique on glass substrates and further heated in a tubular furnace in presence of selenium or sulfur using N2/5% H2 as the carrier gas. The initial precursor powders have been characterised in terms of structural, microstructural and compositional analysis. The obtained coatings have been studied by applying X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy. Detailed description of each procedure step and discussion of the obtained results have been performed along the project.
