When we hear the name of Frankenstein, we associate it with the monster
that terrifies children during the night of Halloween. However, not many
people know that this name belongs, actually, to the Swiss doctor who
created the creature. For this academic work, I have studied the life of this
popular character from its beginning –in Mary Shelley’s imagination- to
nowadays, in order to discover the reason for its transformation from an
intelligent, independent and eloquent character to a terrifying monster
unable to speak. This paper presents my analysis of the two most relevant
works on the figure of Frankenstein: Mary Shelley’s novel (1818) and James
Whale’s film (1931). Through this analysis, we can observe the original
creature and the changes that Whale introduced in his film, which is
fundamental to the creation of the current popular monster. I have divided
the analysis of the Creature in the novel in its physical description, its inner
life, and its education; while the analysis of the Creature in the film is
structured by an overview of his actions and its physical appearance. The
study reveals that the first theatrical adaptations began to transform the
figure of this character, but Universal Studios’ films were the inflection
point. [-]
