This paper describes the phonological variations and changes in the vowel system in
Geordie dialect, a Northern English dialect spoken in Newcastle upon Tyne by the
analysis of the BBC TV show, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. It will compare the differences in
the vowel sounds between Received Pronunciation and Geordie. It has been found that
the inhabitants have an identity issue with other dialects in the North East of England,
this controversy is also mirrored in the sound variations. The vowel system is the most
distinguishing feature, however other characteristics are also mentioned such as;
grammar, lexis and some well-known phrases and expressions. In order to compare
short vowels, long vowels and diphthongs between Received Pronunciation and
Geordie, examples extracted from the TV show are analysed to reflect the results of the
findings. All the facts will also be supported by qualitative data from interviews carried
out with two native speakers from Newcastle. Hence, this project contributes to the field
to the wider area of English dialectology. [-]
