The environmental communication is acquiring a great importance today. After
a process of citizen awareness, the companies and institutions have been
launched to transmit the environmental problems that exist. However, the
environmental communication is not only being used with social purposes, but
that the companies have begun to manipulate itsenvironmental information in
order to satisfy the consumer and make profits. In this way, there are two forms
of environmental communication: greenvertising and greenwashing.
To cope with the strategies of greenwashing, understood as practices that aim
to make the consumers believe that their product is green when in reality it is
not, arise campaigns that want to uncover the reality. In other words, this is a
criticique to the publicity made by the alteration of the content of advertising
messages. It consists in subverting, i.e. disrupting and destroying the
advertising, and seizes the own advertising techniques to reverse the meanings
of the original commercial messages, as it claims, Antoni Gutiérrez-Rubí. 2
Among the organizations that develop counteradvertising campaigns, we
highlight Greenpeace, an organization that is responsible for dealing with the
environmental issues (carried out by firms) through peaceful actions. Through
its trajectory, it accumulates numerous victories, including their
counteradvertising actions againts Kit Kat, Mattle and Dove.
These three companies have been responsible for communicating, among its
values, its work and its environmental commitment. However, the three of them
are involved in contributing to the deforestation of the jungle in Indonesia.
This way, Greenpeace has carried out counteradvertising strategies as:
streetmarketing, stunning spots, and modificating companies' logos. With all of
this, Greenpeace has made enterprises change their attitude and has achieved
their commitment to break the contracts with providers that participate in this
deforestation.
We can therefore say that Kit Kat, Mattle and Dove, have been involved in
cases of greenwashing, since their business values do not correspond with the
carried out actions. In addition, we can say that there is a business trend based
on the greenwashing, so it is imperative, to put an end to these practices, the
work of organizations such as Greenpeace. [-]
