The objective of this study was to analyze psychophysiological and thermal responses facing the presentation of stimuli with affective meaning. We divided this objective into two specific objectives: on the one hand, analyzing the cardiovascular response in three parameters: heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). On the other hand, analyzing the thermal map using infrared functional imaging.
The initial sample comprised 17 participants. Two of them were removed due to failures during the psychophysiological recording session, and 8 of them were removed due to problems during thermal register. The sample finally comprised 15 participants for measuring cardiovascular parameters (Mean = 22,86; SD = 2,19), and 9 participants for thermal measurement (Mean = 22,11; SD = 1,26). All participants were 21 to 28 year-old students.
The recording sessions took place in the morning, from 9:00 pm to 14:00 pm, and in the afternoon, from 16:00 hours to 20:00 hours at Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University Jaume I of Castellón. The experiment consisted of three phases: adaptation (3 minutes), task (14,4 minutes) and recovery (3 minutes).
The results show that diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is the cardiovascular parameter that seems to be most appropriate to locate psychophysiological changes in stimuli with different affective meaning. In this sense, only for this parameter, the categories of stimuli with affective meaning produced larger response than the neutral category, although the absence of statistically significant differences lead us to think about the convenience of replicating the study with a larger sample. Regarding to the application of thermal infrared imaging, the results revealed a temperature increase from the baseline for the four emotional conditions studied in all regions of interest considered. The nose was the region that had recorded a further temperature increase. [-]
