Introduction: the social stigmatization reduces considerably the opportunities of those affected by severe mental illnesses, which affects their process of recovery from these disorders. Weiner (1995) developed a causal attribution model that can be used to explain partially the relationship between the stigmatizing attitudes and the segregative conducts. On the other side, Corrigan, Green, Lundin & Penn (2001) present a model where the familiarity or previous contact with the afflicted influences the perceptions towards these part of the population. This derives in a reduction of the social distance and facilitates the help.
This works has three main aims: 1) comparing the stigmatizing attitudes amongst a group of general population and a group of psicology students, 2) analyzing the effect of the diagnosing labels on the stigmatizing attitudes towards patients with auditive hallucinations and 3) test Weiner's attribution model in the support conduct scope.
Methods: participants were required to submit the Attribution Questionaire (AQ-27) in two different scenarios: one where the esquizofrenic diagnose is displayed and one where it is not.
Results: the psicology students present higher scores in mercyness, support, prevention, coercion and seggregation than the general population sample.
We propose that the diagnosing label influenced specially the valuation of responsability attribution, piety and restriction The models of Weiner are partially cornfirmed.
Discussion: The students of psychology present a minor estigmatización that the general population, being readier to give help. One finds a stigmatizing effect of the diagnostic label, though, paradoxically, the above mentioned effect does not concern the conduct of help. The dangerousness if it provokes the emotion of fear but this does not have relation with the segregation. [-]
