Este trabajo va a poner a prueba la hipótesis que defiende que existen diferencias en reserva cognitiva y reserva cerebral entre sujetos bilingües y monolingües. Se evaluaron 22 participantes 11 bilingües y 11 monolingües diagnosticados de Deterioro Cognitivo Leve con una edad media de 72 años a través de diferentes pruebas neuropsicológicas. Tras esta valoración se les sometió a una resonancia magnética estructural y posteriormente se les administró un cuestionario para valorar el nivel de actividad y reserva cognitiva. Los resultados mostraron, por un lado, que no existían diferencias a nivel de funcionamiento cognitivo entre el grupo de bilingües y el grupo de monolingües. Por otro lado, observando las resonancias magnéticas de cada grupo, el grupo formado por sujetos bilingües obtuvo una mayor atrofia cerebral que el de monolingües mostrando un mayor deterioro a nivel anatómico. Además, los pacientes con mayor reserva cognitiva previa también mostraron mayor atrofia cerebral. Las diferencias observadas permiten plantear la variable de bilingüismo como un factor de reserva cognitiva y de protección frente a las enfermedades neurodegenerativas ligadas a la edad, así como plantear la baja reserva cognitiva como un factor de vulnerabilidad frente a dichas enfermedades. The aim of this research is to test the hypothesis about the differences between the Cognitive reserve and the cerebral reserve among bilingual and monolingual subjects. For this reason, 22 subjects were assessed, specifically, 11 bilingual subjects and 11 monolingual subjects who were newly diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. The participants were about 72 years old and they were tested through different neurological tests. After this assessment, the participants were tested with a structural magnetic resonance and subsequently, they were administered with a questionnaire to value the level of activity and the cognitive reserve. Regarding the results, there were two assumptions. The first one proved that there were not any differences between the bilingual and monolingual groups regarding the cognitive functioning. However, the second result proved that the bilingual group gained higher brain atrophy than the monolingual group showing further deterioration anatomically. In addition, patients with greater cognitive reserve prior also showed greater brain atrophy. Thus, the differences exposed above conclude that the bilingual variable acts as a cognitive reserve factor and as a protection against neurodegenerative diseases associated with the age. Moreover, the bilingual variable raises the low cognitive reserve as a factor of vulnerability towards these diseases. [-]
