Validation of a stoma-specific quality of life questionnaire in a sample of patients with
colostomy or ileostomy. The aim of this study was to assess the validity of a 20-item scale
to measure quality of life in a sample of Spanish subjects with colostomy or ileostomy. A
cross-sectional multicentresurvey was carried out in the province of Castellon between
2013 and 2014 in fourhospitals with colorectal surgery. The construct validity through
confirmatory factor analysis (A.F.C) and structural equation modeling (S.E.M), and
internal consistency was determined. A total of 125 patients were recruited for the study;
the mean age was 66.72 years, 64% were male, 81.6% had colostomies, 85.6% were
diagnosed with intestinal cancer, and 80% were autonomous in stoma care. S.E.M results
suggest removing two items for proper fit of the model and two second-order factors,
personal and social observed. Cronbach's α for Stoma QoL after S.E.M and for 18 items
was 0.861. The study assessed the validity of the 20-item QOL questionnaire in a sample
of 125 patients with colostomy or ileostomy. The scale is a valid research tool for stomata,
but the number of items could be reduced. [-]
