This Masters dissertation explores the ways in which women, particularly from
non-Western cultures, continue to be silenced alongside the Earth. It argues that
mainstream development practices often exacerbate certain forms of structural violence
due to a heavy reliance on culturally biased ways of knowing and “developing.” The
author contends that while ecofeminism has the potential to challenge hierarchies of
power and knowledge, its sizeable gap between theory and practice means that its promises are limited. By reflecting on a tree-planting project initiated by a women’s
group in rural Kenya, the author seeks to link ecofeminist philosophy to “real world”
practice. Through the exploration of the Moringa Project, it is proposed that ecofeminism
might provide an alternative to mainstream development practices and help promote
pockets of inclusive cultural peace. [-]
