The patriarchy has chained several social, economic, political and cultural strategies in Occident in
order to refuse the presence of women in the public space. One of those strategies is the iconographic representation about women as monstrous, sinful, imperfect and lascivious beings (witches, amazons,
gorgons, succubi). An iconography inspired by the Edenic Fall. In the twentieth century, some artist women
have reworked the ancient monstrous representations about women to create a new visual feminism based
on the concept of subversion. Women as Kiki Smith, among other artists, claim the female empowerment
through the transformation of the female monsters into new icons of femininity. The iconography about
witches, amazons, vampires and sphinxes is deconstructed and subverted in order to become a new
feminist paradigm. A twist to the concepts of monstrosity and female imperfection according to the feminist
complains in the twentieth century. [-]
