Old dichotomies between public and private spheres locate women in the latter, more specifically in the
kitchen, as a type of cultural imposition more related to selfless toil than to the hedonism associated with
the pleasures of eating well. The cinema often shows interest in stories and plots related to the world
of cookery, gastronomic celebrations or the cultural importance of specific foods. Consequently, it is
of great interest to delve into the role of women in this context and to question the representations put
forward by cinematographic fictions. In this essay we will analyse different films and different elements
a features of women’s portrayal will surface which will help us to determine from a gender perspective
which factors come into play in these types of fictions [-]
