In the work of Herodotus, amongst the women who hold and effectively exercise power,
Tomyris and Artemisia have both significant common aspects: queens, widows, mothers,
and involved in armed conflicts in which they personally intervene. The differences existing
between them are essentially their characters: legendary and barbaric of the first one;
historical and hellenized the second one. The aim of this paper is to set up their respective
common and different elements, not only through the Herodotus sources, but also later
ones, mainly as far as they assimilate changes in the characters. [-]
