Students in high school answer the questions related to Evolution using darwinianan
theories as well as lamackian postulates, even though, the last ones are considered wrong
nowadays.
2
This issue gets even more confused when we check that students have learned perfectly
all the postulates of the Natural Selection Theory, so, why are they still answering wrong
using lamarckian postulates?
In this TFM, I work under the premise that, students, don't answer wrongly because
their lack of knowledge but, because their reading skills are low. That means, students know
Natural Selection Theory but, when they have to answer questions about that, they are unsure
about their own knowledge and trust more the information they find in the text, even that
information is wrong or contradictory to their own knowledge.
In this TFM, I worked with two groups of students, separated according to their reading
skills, and I studied how their answer changed when they were in one group or another, and,
moreover, I studied which element was the most influential in their answers.
To check if the reading skills were the most influential element, I used a reading test
specifically designed for this goal. The student of the Lowskills group, will use and strategy
called “matching” to solve the questions, even this way would provide him/her wrong
answer. On the contrary, the student from the Highskills group, will find this is way would
provide him/her wrong answer, so he/she will answer using their previous knowledge and
he/she will make right answers to the questions.
The second part of the study, consisted in reading a text about evolution and answering
four questions of openanswer.
When I checked the results, I found that the Lowskills group got low marks in the
questionary than the Highskills group, so I proved that readingskills are the most influential
element when students have to answer questions. So, when we teach Science, we have to
work harder on improving the reading skills of our students [-]
