Tobacco, is a major problem according to the OMS. In Spain, around 30% of the population
smokes. According to studies, the main reason for the initiation and maintenance of smoking
behaviour is social adaptation. Smoking is an addiction that is very difficult to leave. To achieve
this, it is important to know the reason why you want to leave. Some studies reveal that the
main reason why people stop smoking is for health reasons. On the other hand, it is very
important to see the differences between sexes and ages since each of these variables affect this behavior. Our study aims to check if there is difference and the reasons for those who start
smoking, continued smoking and wants to quit a sample of men and women and three age
groups (14-20, 21-40 and older than 40). Therefore 3 test (questionnaire on the reasons for
smoking, Test of Russell and the Richmond Test) were passed to students at an Institute of
Valencia, the members of an Association of elderly and sporadic people by social networks and
others. The results reveal that the main reasons for the our sample started smoking were "a
friend gave me" (34.7%), "I wanted to fit in with my group of friends" (25.3%) and "Wanted to
taste" (22%). The main reasons why the continuous smoking were "relaxes me" (36%), "I like
the taste" (18%) and "to deal with the problems"(14%). To quit, the main reasons were for"I
don't want to suffer from illnesses" (61.3%) and "because find it me very expensive" (11.3%), a
significant percentage of respondents, "do not arise let" (11.3%). Initially, there seems to be
differences in the motivation for smoking and the motivation to quit smoking between men and
women. However, if there is difference in these variables and age. The being greater than are
more dependence on tobacco, and more motivation to quit. [-]
