El periodo final del tráfico del Galeón de Manila ha sido siempre dejado de lado en los estudios sobre esta la línea marítima comercial. La idea repetida constantemente ha sido que a partir de mediados del siglo XVIII entró en una fase de decadencia grave, que se vio todavía más acentuada por la competencia que le hizo la Real Compañía de Filipinas, hasta llegar a su disolución final en 1815.
No obstante, y a raíz de la documentación consultada recientemente en el transcurso de nuestra investigación para la realización de una Tesis Doctoral, estamos en disposición de afirmar que esta es una idea que debería corregirse: el comercio de la Nao de Acapulco se mantuvo estable en sus niveles durante todo el siglo XVIII, y el poco comercio que la Compañía de Filipinas hizo con la Nueva España afectó en poca o ninguna medida al del Galeón, puesto que ambas empresas comerciaban con diferentes productos.
Así pues, nos inclinamos a pensar que esa supuesta decadencia fue inexistente, tendiendo más bien hacia una continuidad manifiesta incluso después de la supresión de la línea. Es más, el comercio tradicional entre Manila y Acapulco llevado a cabo a través de la Nao de China perduró al menos hasta 1821, con unos niveles de comercio y unos géneros iguales a los que hasta la fecha se habían tenido.
