During the last two centuries, French forests evolved dramatically and changed the landscape of the country. The author proposes a cartographic synthesis of the present woodlands, on the base of national forest survey data, and an overview of the contemporary forest history during the 19th and 20th centuries Three significant periods are considered: the administrative and legal reorganization at the beginning of the 19th century; the first great forestation movement during the second half of the 19th century; and the accelerated transformation in the last decades, with widespread spontaneous and artificial forestation following land abandonment. Since the 1980s, forest research in France turned into a significant scientific topic in history, historical biogeography and paleoecology. The development of forest research encourages a new scientific approach based upon interdisciplinary programmes. [-]
