El objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en tratar de ver la importancia de la liquidez y
sus determinantes en la valoración de activos de deuda pública, mediante una revisión
bibliográfica de los trabajos que he considerado más representativos, entre la
literatura económica, acerca de dicha cuestión. He escogido este tema ya que la
liquidez era un aspecto que no todos los inversores le prestaban la atención que
merecía, pero que debido a la actual situación de crisis por la que atravesamos ha
adquirido mayor relevancia, tanto para inversores como para autores.
Para ello, en primer lugar realizaremos una pequeña introducción del concepto de
“liquidez”, en el marco de la deuda pública para poder concluir con una revisión
bibliográfica de algunos de los trabajos o artículos científicos y económicos más
relevantes que han analizado los factores determinantes de liquidez. La deuda pública no es más que una forma de financiarse que tienen todos los Estados.
En el momento que tienen ciertas necesidades de captar dinero, piden prestado a los
inversores. Al igual que el resto de deudas, la devolución del dinero prestado lleva
consigo unos intereses en un periodo de tiempo determinado. Ésta deuda se fracciona
o se reparte en distintos títulos.
En la literatura económica, existe prácticamente un total acuerdo en que la liquidez es
uno de los factores más importantes que afectan a los rendimientos de los bonos. Sin
embargo, es uno de los menos comprendidos. A diferencia de otros aspectos de la
valoración de activos de renta fija, el interés por el estudio de la liquidez es escaso
hasta fechas recientes, en especial en el caso español.
Alonso et al (2004) definen la liquidez como la facilidad de su conversión en dinero,
mientras que Díaz et al (2006) la definen como una función relacionada con la facilidad
o seguridad en que puedan intercambiarse los activos en un corto periodo de tiempo,
sin causar un impacto significativo en los precios. En la práctica, la conversión de un
activo en dinero, implica ciertos costes de búsqueda, retrasos, comisiones, etc. Cuánto
más elevados son éstos costes, más bajo es el grado de liquidez del activo. Los
inversores pueden exigir una rentabilidad adicional con el fin de compensar los costes
de la transacción. Ésta rentabilidad adicional se denomina “prima de liquidez”.
En la literatura económica hay muchos trabajos que prueban la existencia de una
prima de liquidez en los mercados de valores, pero casi todos ellos se centran en los
mercados de renta variable y son sólo unos pocos los que han mostrado interés por los
mercados de deuda pública, la mayoría de ellos con datos del mercado
estadounidense. La preocupación por la liquidez se acentúa tras las últimas crisis
financieras de los mercados internacionales, donde debido a los problemas de
solvencia de algunos países, los inversores buscan cada vez activos más líquidos. El presente trabajo se organiza de la siguiente forma; en primer lugar veremos un
cuadro resumen de cómo se organiza nuestra revisión bibliográfica, con los diferentes
autores y trabajos más relevantes y sus principales características. Seguidamente
realizaremos una revisión más detallada de los distintos trabajos y artículos
encontrados en la literatura, organizada según los distintos factores que pueden
afectar a la liquidez, tales como aquellos ligados a la negociación del activo (volumen,
frecuencia, rotación, etc.), la edad y el plazo hasta el vencimiento, el mercado o factores macroeconómicos. Finalmente comentaremos las conclusiones o puntos más
importantes de nuestro trabajo. [-]
