The present project is a detailed account of the teaching practice carried out at
I.E.S FRANCESC RIBALTA located in Castelló de la Plana. This is one of the
most well-known schools in the region. The school itself has the necessary
facilities that allow students to get a good command of the foreign languages,
such as a video room, a computer room with computers and internet
connection, a library with original and abridged versions in different languages,
an English laboratory with computers, DVDs, CDs, reference books and foreign
novels. Nowadays, there are over 1.800 students enrolled in I.E.S FRANCESC
RIBALTA. The school is focused on the teaching of Compulsory Secondary
Education, Non-Compulsory Secondary Education and Vocational Education.
Additionally the school offers other educational programs such as PEV
(Programa d’Ensenyament en Valencià) and PIP (Programa d’Incorporació
Progressiva). Regarding the number of students, they are divided in the
following groups: there are six groups in each level of 1st and 2nd ESO; eight
groups for 3rd and 4th ESO; and five groups for 1st and 2nd courses of NonCompulsory
Secondary Education.
In general, most of the students in Compulsory and Non-Compulsory
Secondary Education attended the same Primary Schools located in Castelló.
Nevertheless, the foreign population has been increasing in the past few years,
consequently there is a growing number of students from South-America,
Eastern European countries, Morocco and China. Fortunately, most of them
have been living in the town for some time and come from an educated
background.
Bearing in mind the importance of foreign population in the educational
context, one of the objectives of this Secondary school, reflected in the School
Educational Project, is to promote full integration of foreign students. To do so efficiently, the school’s policy as far as grouping goes and whenever possible, is
not to have more than two students with special needs per class. In fact, for the
first three months, the students who do not speak any Spanish or Catalan must
attend an intensive course in Spanish or Catalan with gradual incorporation in the mainstream classes. English is one of the subjects they start attending first
as part of the integration programme.
The level of the class ranges, thus, from what the Common European
Framework terms as Proficient User in the spoken language but Independent in
the written language and Basic User. Most of the students fall within this
category, with some of them at the Breakthrough level (beginner), and most of
them at the Way stage level (elementary).
Generally, students are highly motivated, although quite a few feel shy
when using the spoken language. To motivate them further, different activities
and exchanges have been planned. Pair work and group work should contribute
to give them confidence and will be used as much as possible. However, due to
the diversity in the student-mix and the actual number (around 30 students per
class), communication in the written language and the understanding of texts
(both written and oral) will be paramount, with oral work done in pairs, groups
and oral presentations. Use of ICT (Information and Communication
Technology) will be encouraged by the use of materials from various Internet
resources, and various activities have been designed to make students use ICT
both inside and outside the class when possible. [-]
