The work herein presented is framed under the modality of curriculum design, namely
that of an annual syllabus for the optional course Trabajo Monográfico de Investigación
(Research Monographic Project) in the 4th year of Spanish Compulsory Secondary Education,
offered by the mathematics department, titled “Juegos de mesa del mundo y etnomatemáticas”
(“World Board Games and Ethnomathematics”).
The initiative was derived from a series of observations conducted during the practicum
period in conjunction with a personal interest and fondness for world board games. The
problematic scenario being addressed is set in the secondary education multicultural
mathematics classroom, populated by students who lack an adequate dialogue and expression
space, are emotionally separated from mathematics as a consequence of a low level of
curriculum relatedness, show limited practical abilities in the applied use of mathematics and
problems resolution and no solid or wide perspective of ludic culture.
Our proposal is supported by the acknowledgement and highlighting of the
ethnomathematical practices of different macrocultures and microcultures, excluded from
traditional curricula in favour of Eurocentric mathematics, expressed in one of the six universal
mathematic activities considered by Alan Bishop: playing. Under an intercultural approach of
communication and interrelation in the educational centre, which is applicable to the
extracurricular field, the syllabus runs through the path of research processes initiation and
independent knowledge construction on the part of students.
This is a novel pedagogic proposal for a subject in the mathematics field, due to both its
theoretical foundation and comprehensive positioning, and the applied combination of
cooperative learning methods and assessment systems based on observation. Its intent covers
social negotiation and discovery of knowledge in small groups called tribes, relying on an
extensive spectrum of position, races, war and hunting and mancala board games, with space
for some solitaries and chance games as well. Through the analysis of aspects such as the
morphological structure of the boards and the abstract rules of the games, the students shall
work in the development of several specific and cross-curricular skills by means of an
entertaining and ludic practice of essentially mathematical contents –symmetrical geometries,
abstract reasoning, planning and strategy, probabilities and chance addressing, notation
schemes, arborescent thinking…–, in addition to contributing to the conservation of an
important part of the intangible heritage of humankind. [-]
