It has been argued that misunderstandings are more likely to appear in computer-mediated communication (CMC) than in face-to-face (F2F) communication due to the lack of
emotional cues in CMC contexts. The aim of this paper is to provide real data, and a linguistic
analysis of how CMC users apply a set of techniques, suggested by Etchevers (2008), in order
to avoid misunderstandings. WhatsApp conversations were analyzed to show how the
participants employ a set of guidelines to reproduce F2F interactions. Results show how
WhatsApp users adapt the language through the use of emoticons and linguistic alterations
(e.g. exaggerated use of punctuation marks, use of onomatopoeias, repetition of graphemes,
use of capital letters, and reformulation of words). My conclusion is that CMC users have
adapted the language used in these contexts to prevent misinterpretations and produce clearer
statements. [-]
