The transition from childhood to adulthood is known as “puberty” and/or “adolescence”
and involves a set of physical, psychological and social changes. For girls, a clear sign of puberty (and the most used in research) is menarche, which typically sets at 12-13 years old. There has been a secular trend since at least 1860 in the onset age of menarche. In contemporary times there are also important individual variations in pubertal timing in both girls and boys. Adolescence can be sometimes a difficult time. Traditionally it has been reported that early onset in boys and late onset in girls predict positive outcomes from a psychological point of view for adolescents. However, a consistent finding in literature is that early puberty in girls may bring particularly negative consequences for them. This is precisely the aim of the present literature review, where we approach first a description of main negative consequences of early puberty for girls; then we briefly focus on the persistence (or not) of these negative outcomes later in life; and, third, we summarize main theories/hypothesis that nowadays are trying to explain the reasons of pubertal timing variations in girls, as well as some negative outcomes.
