Disgust is an emotion that highlights the specificity of human beings as natural and cultural beings.
This is the reason why disgust is a privileged object of study for Neuroethics. In the following
article we will try to show that disgust is not merely a physiological reaction. Due to evolution, both
biological and cultural, disgust is a highly complex cognitive emotion. We will see what role had the
rhetorics of disgust in various processes of dehumanization and cruelty throughout history. Finally,
we will examine how empathy works in moral agency and we will discuss how this psychological
mechanism is related with disgust. [-]
