Boys and girls with Language Disorders (LD/SLI) have grammatical but
also pragmatic difficulties, and can even be diagnosed with Pragmatic
Language Disorder (PLD) when the latter are very notable. These
pragmatic problems are detected using idiom comprehension tasks
(Frazier Norbury, 2004), among other tools. Yet the literature does not
make it clear as to whether the profiles of SLI and PLD are really different
(Vance and Wells, 1994) or whether the same type of mistakes are made
(Kerbel and Grunwell, 1998a; 1998b). Hence, in this study the aim is
to determine whether there are differences in the competence in idioms
of an SLI group and a group with PLD, by performing a quantitative
(amount) but also qualitative (type) analysis of their answers. To achieve
this, three groups of children between 4 and 7 years of age (SLI, PLD and
Control) were evaluated by means of an idiom definition task. Results
show that the PLD group was less competent than the others, but also
gave more incoherent answers than those in the SLI group. Hence, it can
be concluded that the qualitative analysis of idioms makes it possible to
pinpoint pragmatic problems within the population affected by SLI.
