Pharmacotherapy is necessary, however it is not always enough to treat or cure some diseases.
Therefore, other alternatives have been sought to improve the situation of patients who resist all
types of proven treatment. Brain stimulation techniques or therapies are used to treat mental
disorders or conditions by activating or inhibiting the brain through the use of electricity. This can
be achieved by using electrodes that are surgically placed in the brain or non-invasively using
electrodes on the outside of the scalp. And this literature review focuses on seeing the effects of
brain stimulation with respect to impulsive-compulsive disorders with the main objective of
obsessive-compulsive disorder, drug addiction and eating disorders, specifically, food intake or
binge eating. An exhaustive review of the articles describing the use of brain stimulation in the
treatment of mental disorders was conducted. The PubMed and Google Scholar databases were
searched from the beginning until May 2019. In the first round, what was done was a search with
the following keywords: "brain stimulation", "neuromodulation", "direct current stimulation"
“transcranial direct stimulation”, "drug addiction","obsessive-compulsive disorder","food
intake","transcranial magnetic stimulation","repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation” and
"mental disorders", obtaining 14,678 articles in total as a result. In the second screening, articles
that were experimental using brain stimulation as therapy were included, obtaining 102 articles.
And in a third and last screening, articles were included that only included human subjects as a
sample, with 11 articles finally remaining. The results suggest that, on the one hand, there is an
improvement in some specific symptoms and not the disorder itself, such as checking in the
case of OCD or craving in the case of drug addiction. On the other hand, it is also observed that
the prefrontal cortex is the brain area where the intervention has been most made, which is
consistent with the fact that impulsive-compulsive disorders have a problem with control and/or
inhibition. In conclusion, despite the positive results brain stimulation techniques present some
side effects such as scalp pain, headache, nausea, etc. Also, more studies are needed to
continue seeing the effect of brain stimulation, since, it is still unknown whether it is effective or
not in the long term, and also with other samples such as bulimia, in the case of eating disorders
or subjects who suffer simply from binge eating and not other diseases such as obesity, although
they have a close relationship. [-]
