Adjustment Disorder (AjD) is considered an important health problem due to its
personal, social and economic implications. Several studies show the relationship
between normal personality traits (5-factor model) and some emotional disorders.
Likewise, normal personality traits may be mediating the development of an AjD when
a particular stressful event is present. The objective of the present work was to explore
the predictive capacity of non-pathological personality traits of severity of AjD
symptoms. The sample consisted of 68 patients diagnosed with AjD (76.5% women)
with a mean age of 33.21 years (SD = 10.5). Personality traits were evaluated with the
NEO-FFI. To evaluate the clinical symptoms, the BDI-II, BAI and Stress and Loss
Inventory (IEP) were used. All these measures were taken in the initial evaluation.3
Linear regression analyzes showed that Neuroticism (β = .590, t = 5.927, p <.000) and
Extraversion (β = -. 216, t = -2.171, p <.05) were predictors of severity of depressive
symptomatology. The joint model with both variables showed an R2 of .478. On the
other hand, Neuroticism also showed significant results in its predictive capacity (β =
.489, t = 4.343, p <.000) of stress and loss symptoms, which showed an R2 of .239. No
significant results were found regarding the anxiety symptomatology. Results showed
the relationship between some personality traits (Neuroticism and Extraversion) with
the severity of AjD symptomatology. These results help to expand the knowledge of the
psychopathology of AjD. The main limitation of the study was the small sample size. [-]
