Asociación entre Porphyromonas gingivalis y enfermedad de Alzheimer. Revisión integradora

Abstract

Background: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative process, of unknown cause, that affects a large percentage of the world population. Studies conducted over the years suggest that there is an association between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's disease. Porphyromonas gingivalis, is constituted as a typical bacteria of the oral cavity, with sufficient capacity to infect the host and produce periodontal disease. The hypothesis has been proposed that this pathogen could enter the blood circulation and reach the brain tissue, contributing to the appearance and / or progress of Alzheimer's. Aim: To check if there is an association between the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis and Alzheimer's disease and to examine the direction of the disease. Methodology: An integrative review was carried out, by combining the keywords selected in Health Sciences Descriptors and in Medical Subject Headings. The databases used were PubMed, CINAHL, Informa Healthcare, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Plus Library. Temporality filters and human studies were used. The methodological quality was carried out through the CASPe critical reading tool and, through the STROBE scale. Results: A total of 195 articles were obtained. After the application of filters, inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 have been chosen to carry out the review. Conclusion: The findings suggest that there is an association between Alzheimer's disease and Porphyromonas gingivalis and it is suggested that it is bidirectional.

Introducción: La enfermedad de Alzheimer es un proceso neurodegenerativo, de causa desconocida, que afecta a un gran porcentaje de la población mundial. Los estudios realizados a lo largo de los años, sugieren que existe una asociación entre la enfermedad periodontal y la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Porphyromonas gingivalis, se constituye como una bacteria típica de la cavidad oral, con suficiente capacidad para infectar al huésped y producirle enfermedad periodontal. Se ha propuesto la hipótesis de que este patógeno, pudiese ingresar en la circulación sanguínea y, llegar al tejido cerebral, contribuyendo a la aparición y/o progreso del Alzheimer. Objetivo: Revisar si existe asociación entre la bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis y la enfermedad de Alzheimer y, examinar cuál es la dirección de esta. Metodología: Se llevó a cabo una revisión integradora, mediante la combinación de las palabras clave seleccionadas en Descriptores de Ciencias de la Salud y, en Medical Subject Headings. Las bases de datos que se utilizaron fueron, PubMed, CINAHL, Informa Healthcare, ProQuest y, la Biblioteca Cochrane Plus. Se usaron filtros de temporalidad y, estudios realizados en humanos. La calidad metodológica se realizó mediante la herramienta de lectura crítica CASPe y, mediante la escala STROBE. Resultados: Se obtuvieron un total de 195 artículos. Tras la aplicación de filtros, criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se han escogido 20 para realizar la revisión. Conclusión: Los hallazgos obtenidos sugieren que sí existe una asociación entre la enfermedad de Alzheimer y Porphyromonas gingivalis y, se insinúa que ésta es bidireccional.
