Background: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative process, of unknown cause,
that affects a large percentage of the world population. Studies conducted over the
years suggest that there is an association between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's
disease. Porphyromonas gingivalis, is constituted as a typical bacteria of the oral
cavity, with sufficient capacity to infect the host and produce periodontal disease. The
hypothesis has been proposed that this pathogen could enter the blood circulation and
reach the brain tissue, contributing to the appearance and / or progress of Alzheimer's.
Aim: To check if there is an association between the bacterium Porphyromonas
gingivalis and Alzheimer's disease and to examine the direction of the disease.
Methodology: An integrative review was carried out, by combining the keywords
selected in Health Sciences Descriptors and in Medical Subject Headings. The
databases used were PubMed, CINAHL, Informa Healthcare, ProQuest, and the
Cochrane Plus Library. Temporality filters and human studies were used. The
methodological quality was carried out through the CASPe critical reading tool and,
through the STROBE scale.
Results: A total of 195 articles were obtained. After the application of filters, inclusion
and exclusion criteria, 20 have been chosen to carry out the review.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that there is an association between Alzheimer's
disease and Porphyromonas gingivalis and it is suggested that it is bidirectional. [-]

bidireccional. [-]
