Introduction: Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease that is transmitted through the bite of
sandflies infected with the protozoan leishmania. There are three types of leishmaniasis:
visceral, cutaneous and mucocutaneous.
Objective: To determine the prevention, health promotion and treatment of human
leishmaniasis.
Methodology: A bibliographic research was carried out with two search sequences. In the first
one, the descriptors "leishmaniasis", "nursing care", "nursing", "primary health care",
"therapeutics" and "environmental health" were used in different databases such as
Medline / PubMed, BVS, Cochrane Library Plus and CINAHL. Where as in the second one, a
search was conducted on the Spanish Government website with the descriptor "leishmaniasis".
Results: In the first search, a number of 11,870 articles were obtained. After the application of
filters and selection criteria, only 23 articles were included. Furthermore, the second search
obtained 91 articles, selecting 4 after the application of the filters and the selection criteria.
Discussion: Different studies deal with the prevention, promotion of health and treatment of
human leishmaniasis at international level. Nevertheless, at national level, studies are focused
in prevention. There are no studies copping with the nursing action in the prevention, health
promotion and treatment of leishmaniasis.
Conclusions: There is a need for agreement on the protocol that must be followed at
international level. At national level, the health system lacks of protocols and guidelines for
action in the prevention, health promotion and treatment of leishmaniasis. [-]

Introducción: La leishmaniasis es una enfermedad zoonótica que se transmite a través la
picadura de flebótomos infectados por el protozoo leishmania. Existen tres tipos de
leishmaniasis: visceral, cutánea y mucocutánea.
Objetivo: Determinar la prevención, la promoción de la salud y el tratamiento de la
leishmaniasis humana.
Metodología: Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con dos secuencias de búsqueda. En la
primera, se utilizaron los descriptores “leishmaniasis”, “nursing care”, “nursing”, “primary
health care”, “therapeutics” y “environmental health” en las bases de datos Medline/PubMed,
BVS, Biblioteca Cochrane Plus y CINAHL. En la segunda, se realizó una búsqueda en el portalweb del Gobierno español con el descriptor “leishmaniasis”.
Resultados: En la primera búsqueda se obtuvieron 11.870 artículos. Tras la aplicación de filtros
y criterios de selección, finalmente se incluyeron 23 artículos. La segunda búsqueda obtuvo 91
artículos, seleccionándose 4 tras la aplicación de los filtros y los criterios de selección.
Discusión: Diferentes estudios tratan la prevención, promoción de la salud y tratamiento de la
leishmaniasis humana a nivel internacional, sin embargo, a nivel nacional los estudios se dirigen
a su prevención. No hay estudios que se dirijan a la actuación de enfermería en la prevención,
promoción de la salud y tratamiento de la leishmaniasis.
Conclusiones: Hace falta investigación de consenso sobre la actuación a seguir a nivel
internacional. A nivel nacional el sistema sanitario carece de protocolos y guías de actuación
en la prevención, promoción de la salud y tratamiento de la leishmaniasis. [-]
