El diario barcelonés La Vanguardia nació en 1881 con una expresa voluntad de resaltar su contenido literario y científico. The New York Times, desde el mismo momento de su publicación, cuando aún era The New York Daily Times, incluía noticias procedentes del ámbito científico y técnico. La historia del periodismo científico ha estado marcada por divulgadores que fueron capaces de tener un público lector interesado en conocer el desarrollo científico, tecnológico y médico.
