«Sobre mi cadáver». Un análisis sobre el papel del cuerpo en la obra de Mona Hatoum

Abstract

Hoy en día es generalmente reconocido cómo las obras de numerosas artistas femeninas han supuesto un punto de inflexión en el desarrollo del arte contemporáneo. Una de las artistas que ha contribuido a este cambio es Mona Hatoum, quien ha explorado temas como el género o la propia concepción del hogar desde marcos expresivos muy diversos. Este artículo considera desde una perspectiva de género sus obras iniciales, en las que a través del uso del cuerpo, la artista desafía al público a atender problemas acuciantes. Para ello, en primer lugar se analizará el empleo que hace del cuerpo como vía de expresión. En segundo lugar, se atenderá a las tres dimensiones del cuerpo humano que la artista cuestiona, evidenciando las restricciones sociales y culturales que condicionan nuestra imagen y uso del mismo.

Nowadays it is generally acknowledged how the works of contemporary female artists have marked a turning point in the development of contemporary art. One of the female artists has contributed to this change is Mona Hatoum, who has explored different topics ranging from gender issues to the conception of home from diverse expressive frames. This article considers from a gender view her initial works, in which the artist, through a use of the body, challenges audience to reflect about urgent problems. Firstly, the text analyzes the use which Mona Hatoum makes of the body as a way of expression. Secondly, it addresses the three dimensions of human body which artist questions, showing the social and cultural restrictions which determine our image and use of the body.
