dc.description.abstract | 3 Abstract Background : Fibromyalgia syndrome is o ften associated with depression. However, there is little research on the process of developing depression in pain conditions . Cognitive content could be a good way to measure depressive thinking and a target for interventions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a positive psychology intervention in increasing positive cognitions and reducing negative content compared to a control intervention. Moreover, we explore the role of cognitive content on depression in fibromyalgia . Method : S eventy participants were randomly allocated to the B est P ossible S elf intervention (n=37) or a Daily Activities control condition (n=33) . The short version of the sentence completion test was used as outcome . The responses were coded by valence and content by two independent raters. Depression was assessed by the B eck D epression I nventory - II. All measures were administered before and after the intervention . Results: A fter a posit ive guided - imagery intervention, participants reduced their depressive symptomatology and generated more positive content compared to participants in the control condition . Participants in both condi tions r educed negative content at post - intervention. Furthermore, par ticipants that practiced the best possible self generated more positive and less negative sentences related to the future and the ir health. Post - treatment levels of positive thinking and reduced negative health cognitions helped explain the reduction in depressive symptomatology even when controlling for baseline scores. Conclusions: T he best possible self i ntervention is effective in increasing positive cognitions compared to a control condition. Our findings indicate that cognitive cognitions are a mechanism of change in response to a psychological interventio n. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
