The synthesis of inverse spinels of Mg (Mg2TiO4), Mg-Zn ((Mg0.5Zn0.5)2TiO4) and Zn (Zn2TiO4), doped with different amounts of Fe3+ replacing Mg/Zn2+ and Ti4+ (M2-xFe2xTi1- xO4, with M= Mg and/or Zn and x = 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1), has been performed by the metalorganic decomposition of citrate gels (MOD-citrates route). It is analyzed the effect of Fe3+ doping , synthesis temperature (1000°C and 1200°C) and replacement of Mg2+ by Zn2+ on the formation and optical properties of the spinels. The coloring performance of the fired pigments once glazed within two conventional ceramic glazes has been also investigated. For the characterization of synthesized samples, the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy (interval 300-2500nm) have been used, including cell parameters, colorimetry (CIE-L*a*b*) and total solar reflectance (TSR) measurements. In this study it has been seen how the doping with Fe3+ and Zn2+ increases the reactivity of the spinels, being even stable as ceramic pigments and maintaining the characteristics of the powders in one of the glazes. Also, doping with Fe3+ produces a color modulation from yellow to reddish brown, and doping with Zn2+ produces lighter colors compared with the spinels without Zn.
