Aims: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer (and temporal evolution, Group A) and QoL of survivor women (Group B), identifying their major affections. Compare QoL between groups, establishing a time in which it is similar. To investigate the influence of sociodemographic and oncological process related factors on QoL.
Methodology: Multicenter, observational, prospective study in Asturian women with breast cancer. Main variable: QoL, through EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 (self-completed). Secondary variables: sociodemographic and process related data. Analysis: descriptive and inferential; To compare averages of related samples the Wilcoxon Rank test was used and for independent groups, U Mann-Whitney; To compare qualitative variables, the Ji-Square; To study the influence of factors on the QoL, multiple linear regression. The research project was approved by the Ethics Committee of Asturias.
Findings: Significant differences at the beginning in "Social Functioning" [p = 0.0042, Group B (85.76) / Group A (79.07)], "Fatigue" [p = 0.0195, B (22.78) / A (29,37)] and "Body Image" [p = 0.0004, B (81.86) / A (71.76)], among others. At the end, only in "Fatigue" [p = 0.0183, B (22.78) / A (29.81)], when A and B suffer from insomnia, sexual dysfunction and concern for the future, among others. A model was constructed that explains the QoL in 82.13%.
Conclusions: The significantly impact quality of life of the Group A improves significantly to 28 months. Since that time, the QoL is similar in both groups. Attending therapy or maintaining good sexual functioning has a positive effect on QoL. [-]
