The number of air transport users is increased annually and so does the number
of journeys. This translates to a greater amount of fuel used, higher economic
expenses of companies and higher emissions to the atmosphere that pollute the
environment, with adverse effects for the population. All this shows the
importance of the search for ways to reduce this consumption: the solution
contemplated for the problem in this project is to reduce the drag in air transports.
By manipulating the turbulent boundary layer in the fluid, it has already been
tested in several studies that it is possible to reduce the so-called 'skin friction
drag', which, in the field of aviation, amounts to about 50% of total friction. To
achieve this manipulation, the induction of a perpendicular movement to the flow
has been chosen.
The effectiveness of the reduction of the friction of the chosen solution has
already been verified on flat plates in several publications, with satisfactory
results. In this work, the percentage of reduced friction has been re-measured,
although a new condition has been added to the trials: the speed of the fluid,
which until now has been taken as constant, has been changed to one speed that
varies with time. The essential interest of this change lies in the fact that it
simulates in some way the phenomenon of wind gusts many surfaces are
subjected to in real applications and, therefore, it will allow us to know its
effectiveness with conditions closer to reality.
After the processing of the data obtained experimentally the value of the reduction
of the friction is finally obtained. In this study, the reduction is 1.2 to 1.3%, a value
similar to that obtained with a constant fluid velocity, which proves that the
solution is still valid, even considering the gusts of wind.
With this value, and taking into account the percentage of the total drag that is
the 'skin friction drag' if the wave motion studied were applied on the surface of
the plane, an ideal total reduction of 0.6 to 0.7% would be found.
Athough the implementation of this solution is not feasible at the moment since
the systems that manage to induce the desired effect are too heavy, in the not too distant future it could be achieved with the help of intelligent materials that
could produce the same effect but without these disadvantages.
In order to study the possible economic and ecological impact, data regarding the
reduction of consumption and the costs obtained in other studies where skin
friction drag reduction has been achieved by other means are used.
Knowing that the relationship between the percentage of 'drag' reduced and the
reduction of fuel consumption is almost directly proportional, a calculation of the
last can be made. Calculations of economic savings and emissions are calculated
for just one airplane, based on fuel cost and combustion emissions values that
are specified in the report. Reasonable values for both (cost and emissions) have
been fixed for calculations, although, as it is well known, these values are highly
variable.
Finally, the values of saving and reduction of emissions are estimated for the fleet
of the airline Level and worldwide assuming the solution was to be implemented
in all the air transport sector. [-]
