Musical performance and rhythm is a voluntary movement that involves the motor areas working with the auditory cortex. Rhythm is a cognitive function that requires coordination between auditory and motor zones. The motor system is responsible for the movement of the body and is composed of several areas (the primary motor cortex, premotor, basal ganglia and cerebellum) that interact to perform the action. The music is composed by tone and rhythm, in the latter it focuses the present study, which performs a task of rhythm (Tapping Task). The aim of this work is to study the anatomical correlates of rhythm. Participants (n = 94) were organized into four groups based on musical experience (musicians or non-musicians) and laterality (right-handed or left-handed) and completed a Tapping task with a frequency of 2 Hz with both hands. The results showed that left-handed musicians perform better than right-handed musicians and controls. At the level of anatomical correlates, the best execution was associated with larger volumes of gray matter in primary auditory and motor areas, and with less volume in the extrapyramidal system (nucleus putamen and cerebellum). The results showed how individual anatomical differences in auditory-motor zones determine the level of rhythm performance. [-]
